How Free is Free?
My mom had six children. She worked a full time job to ensure that we were well fed and clothed. I never saw the inside of a Daycare Center. She cooked every meal for us. She made sure we got to all of our activities. She could knit incredibly fast. I recall, as a little child, needing a pair of mittens to play outside in the snow. Sure enough...literally within 20 minutes or so, I was donning my new wool mitts.
It's never until we are older that we realize the sacrifice our mom's made for us. I often wondered what motivated her. It took me years, but now I know--IT WAS LOVE. She loved us. Real love sacrifices for another.
The Bible uses the word "AGAPE" to describe the type of love God has for us. Agape is like no other kind of love. It is a love that is "outpouring," others oriented, and selfless. We can't actually love in this way...only God can. So He calls us to be conduits of that love to "one another." In fact, God's love working through us, should be the motivation in all we do.
